Earlier this year, our Head of Research Dr Nicola McCarthy sat down with Megan Thomas, Headshot of Dr Nicola McCarthyMultimedia Editor at Drug Discovery World, to explore Nicola’s role at the MTI, her career journey, and her views on the current opportunities and challenges in the field of drug discovery. We are delighted that the video interview has now been published.

Nicola oversees both the wet and dry labs of the Milner Institute, where we are developing our own research programme and target discovery pipeline. The methods and approaches being used are disease-agnostic and we are currently applying these in oncology, respiratory disease, metabolic disorders, infectious disease, inflammatory bowel disease and CNS diseases. The three research groups at the MTI are the Target Discovery Team led by Dr Erica Bello, the Computational Research and Artificial Intelligence team led by Dr Namshik Han, and the Functional Genomics Screening Laboratory, led by Drs Chun Hao Wong and Ulrike Künzel. Find out more by reading our 2024 in-house research updates.

Nicola has a degree in Anatomical Studies and a PhD focused on apoptosis and cancer. She has a wealth of experience from a career in academic, science publishing and industry roles, and joined MTI as our Consortium Manager in 2021. Nicola became our interim deputy director from 2022 to 2023, before moving into her current role as Head of Research. Watch the video interview here.
